Tropical storm Nate is presently located 45 miles west of Puerto Lempira moving NNW at 10mph. Nate is now forecasted to pass 115 nautical miles NE of Utila on Friday 0300 AM as a well-formed system (see above graphic). Nate will be entering the Carribean Sea from the mainland on Thursday after 10:00 PM where it will likely gain strength. Continue to monitor the weather as forecast may change in the coming hours. Strong wind gusts (20+ knots) are expected shortly after midnight on Friday. Wind gusts will peak in Utila at 30 knots on Friday afternoon at 12:00 PM. The government of Mexico has extended the Hurricane Watch westward
along the northern coast of the Yucatan peninsula to Rio Lagartos. Additional hurricane watches will likely be issued later this evening. Tropical storm Nate will likely be a category 1 hurricane after passing north of Utila. US Airforce “Hurricane Hunters” are sending aircraft into the storm presently. The US National Hurricane Center offers tips for preparing for a storm or hurricane.
In Utila, expect an additional 2.2 inches of rain accumulation over the next 72 hours. Sustained wind gusts in excess of 30 knots are expected to begin Friday after midnight and continue throughout the day. The weather should begin to normalize by late Friday night.
On the forecast track, the center of Nate will continue to move over eastern Honduras this evening and over the northwestern Caribbean Sea tonight and Friday. The center is then expected to move near or over the northeastern part of the Yucatan Peninsula and the adjacent islands late Friday or Friday night, and move into the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday.
